Introduction: Say a Little about Yourself! {by 5/29}

Yes, this is a little cheesy.  However, this is your first semester of graduate classes.  Let’s at least start to sort of get to know each other.  Please answer the following about yourself (the more, the merrier, but no pressure): (1) Name?  (2) What college/university did you graduate from?  (3) Something wicked interesting/cool about you (it is okay to brag here)?  (4) What are your initial thoughts (or experience) about psychological measurement?  (5) What do you know about cognitive-behavioral therapy and/or evidence-based practice?

Your original post should be posted by 5/29.  Post your two replies no later than 5/31.  *Please remember to click the “reply” button when posting a reply.  This makes it easier for the reader to follow the blog postings.

*Strong suggestion: Write all your blogs on a separate document.  Then, copy and paste it.  This will make your life easier and less stressful in case something “wacky” happens with technology.

    1. My name is Kiera Mills.
    2. I graduated from Worcester State in Spring.
    3. I had a second major outside of Psychology. I majored in Business with a concentration in Marketing. I also interned in Human Resources for a year and a half.
    4. It’s been 2 years since I took a Psych Stats and Measurement class. I am decently confident in relearning the subject, but my other school used SPSS as their stats program and I prefer using Excel.
    5. I never took any specific CBT courses but know a bit about the concept. I am a bit more familiar with evidence based practices.

Hi Kiera! I imagine that business degree coming in handy in the future. I feel like I’m lacking some business perspective and expertise that could lend itself to being a therapist.

I always have a little trouble initially with feeling completely comfortable using the different types of software but I hope to feel more comfortable the more that I familiarize myself with it. I’m looking forward to more discussions in the future!

Hi Kiera, my school also used SPSS and I did not like that program very much. I found it kind of confusing at times. I also went to school in Worcester.

    Hello, Everyone!

    1. My name is Nick Cedeno
    2. I graduated from MCPHS (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences)
    3. I live on Cape Cod with my family including my brothers, my sister-in-law, nephew and parents. I’m interested in farming and agriculture; I love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and cooking.
    4. I was previously in an applied behavior analysis program where psychological measurement had to be precise to be replicable in the future. This allows for specific, measurable goals that are realistic to achieve in a reasonable amount of time and relevant to the individual in focus.
    5. My knowledge on CBT is limited, however I was introduced to evidence-based practice in my undergrad. I remember discussing approaches like CBT and EMDR but never going into more detail about the specifics.

Hi Nick 🙂 I love the cape, my uncle and aunt live there and I love to visit them whenever I can! I struggled in stats and statistics in behavioral psychology during my undergrad so since you have a good grasp of the subject because of past experience, I’ll go to you for any questions, haha! My knowledge for CBT compared to evidence-based practice is the opposite of yours. I know more about CBT than evidence-based, but excited to learn more about it!

      Hi Nick,

I love Cape Cod. I used to have friends that had a house down there. We would go each summer. I have always wondered what it is like down there when it isn’t durning the summer time. Another thing that caught my eye when seeing your post was your hobby in cooking. What is your favorite dish to make?

        Hi Maddy!

I really like making braised beef ribs with veggies, but I recently got a smoker and I’ve been loving that during the summer.

      Hi Nick,

My family has been going down the cape the first week of August for 15 years. We go to Falmouth and Woods Hole. I also have a friend who is doing a summer internship on Nantucket for the second year in a row.

    4. My initial thoughts about psychological measurement is that it is tricky. I remember taking a stats class in my sophomore year in college and I had a hard time understanding it. But I also thought it was really cool.
    5. I have some knowledge about CBT. I took a class where the professor taught us about many therapy practices. Honestly that class intrigued my interest in wanting to specialize in it.

Hi Maddy 🙂 I also struggled with stats during my undergrad and statistics in behavioral psychology so I’m a little nervous about this course, but also excited. I also have some knowledge in CBT, but I could definitely learn more about it and learn a lot more about evidence-based practice.

Hi Xhesika! I have trouble driving from my house on Cape Cod to Worcester to stay overnight for classes, I can only imagine the added factor of switching countries on top of your efforts to further your education. I am interested in learning more about Albania! I look forward to more conversations in the future.

      Hi Alexis!

I love the cape, it must be nice getting to be there so often. Criminology as a minor is really interesting! I took a few criminal justice classes in undergrad, my capstone was on psychopathic recidivism and it was fascinating learning about the intersections of psychology and criminology.

    2. I graduated from Umass Dartmouth in May 2024.
    3. I have previously interned at an outpatient young adult center during my undergraduate program, and I currently do in-home therapy as a therapeutic training and support provider, and I am also a therapeutic mentor.
    4. My past experience with psychological measurement would most likely be related to some of the classes I took in my undergraduate program, mainly statistics in psychology, research methods, and a psychological testing class. I found that these classes were beneficial for understanding how certain psychological constructs can be measured, however I definitely struggled with navigating SPSS.
    5. I have a general understanding of cognitive-behavioral therapy and evidence-based practices. I regularly use these modalities in my work as a therapeutic training and support provider, but I am looking forward to learning more about these and how to apply them further in my work.

      Hi Olivia,

I also had a hard time navigating SPSS. I hated using it because if I made one error the whole thing would be thrown off. Working as an in home therapist seems really cool and I bet you get a lot of experience in working all different populations.

      Hi Olivia,

I definitely agree that SPSS is hard to navigate. I always hated how the variable names and descriptions were on a separate tab instead of being editable in the main screen. Its annoying how many sub tabs and buttons you have to press to get what you want
